Fair questions. Honest answers.

Health gadgets are full of big promises, so here is exactly what the Homebeat is, what it does, and what it doesn’t.

Anyone who wants to know their numbers, and especially families looking out for each other. Many people buy one for a parent and one for themselves. It’s also popular with hikers, skiers, travellers and pilots who want a quick check at altitude.

Yes, that’s who we designed it for. One button, big bright numbers, nothing to set up and no phone needed. Show them once, and they can check on their own and read the numbers out to you.

No, and we won’t pretend it is. Homebeat is a wellness device for general wellness, sports and aviation use. It isn’t intended to diagnose, treat or monitor any disease, and it isn’t FDA-cleared as a medical device. If you have a health condition, follow your doctor’s advice on checking your oxygen.

For most healthy adults at sea level, 95% to 100%. It’s naturally lower at altitude and can be lower with some conditions. The most useful number is your own usual one, so check a few times when you feel well, and ask your doctor what’s right for you.

A fingertip oximeter gives a close estimate, not a lab result. Readings are steadiest after about 30 seconds of sitting still, with warm hands and a bare nail. Like most oximeters, it can read a little high on darker skin and with poor circulation, so watch your trend over time rather than one number. [Add our own accuracy test results here.]

Check again first: warm your hands, sit still and wait 30 seconds. If it’s still lower than usual, or you feel unwell, call your doctor. If anyone has trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion or blue lips, call 911 straight away, whatever the screen says.

No. No app, no account, no Wi-Fi and nothing shared with anyone. Your readings stay on the device.

Yes. It weighs 27 g and slips into a pocket. Readings are naturally lower at altitude, so check at home first to know your baseline, then compare on the trip.

[Confirm with the supplier.] Adult fingertip clips may not fit small fingers well. Ask your paediatrician before relying on any reading for a child.
